"ARROYO"

A dry channel through which water flows intermittently and irregularly. Kind of like this blog.

My art is an infectious need for me, sometimes a burden but most often a blessing.

This blog is about me and my obsessions, my loves, my need to create and my need of JUNK. I'm addicted to thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets and all roads leading off the beaten track to discover that perfect piece of junk. I recycle old license plates, old shovels, wheelbarrows, saw blades and anything else that's funky using my hand held plasma cutter. I love working with steel, sculpting, photography, watercolor painting, stained glass, and turning everyday utilitarian objects into art. Junked cars ~ I will always veer off the path to search out the beautiful wrecked Arroyo JunKers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and anywhere else the road may lead. When I'm not searching for those JunKers

What was my Inspiration? and Shovel Art #7

The question I get asked the most at my shows is "how on earth did you start cutting shovels"?  Well it all began the day I brought home my "Thermal Dynamics Plasma Cutter".  My husband set up the air compressor and put the water filters on then I had the hard task of plugged it in. I was desperate to cut something so I scanned the backyard for some steel and I spotted the hoe, started cutting with no design plan in mind and...

so the story began......

From then on I've focused on garden type equipment as inspiration.  The deciding factor was .... it's Steel, it's cheap and it's unusual!  I've come a long way in the last 5 years - a testament that no matter how old you are or how late you start,  You Can Do It!  Everyday, every step takes me further and further down the trail to growth, learning, failure & life.  It's all a part of the process.  You have to keep trying, keep experimenting, keep being crazy, think out of the box and look at all the inspiration around you it's mind boggling!!

Shovel Art #7
This was a fun piece.  I enjoyed doing the fence and the bird on it, but it just seemed a little lack luster so, I took out some old barbed wire and started making a nest that goes through front and back.

But, really there isn't a front and back since the image is on both sides.
So you decide which way you want it.
Sorry, but it was really hard to get a good picture of these.

Hi SZQ - this post shows that you have not disappeared; and you are out there at the sharp end of a shovel still. Go well. B

my dear ... only YOU can even think of turning something like a shovel into a piece of art!! even if it's "accidental" , it's clever!!

so what's up girl?? i've been off for 3 weeks now, had a couple of health scares and had totally NO mood to make anything. in the midst of changing my eating habits and lifestyle now ... hope all is well in your world!! :)
