"ARROYO"

A dry channel through which water flows intermittently and irregularly. Kind of like this blog.

My art is an infectious need for me, sometimes a burden but most often a blessing.

This blog is about me and my obsessions, my loves, my need to create and my need of JUNK. I'm addicted to thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets and all roads leading off the beaten track to discover that perfect piece of junk. I recycle old license plates, old shovels, wheelbarrows, saw blades and anything else that's funky using my hand held plasma cutter. I love working with steel, sculpting, photography, watercolor painting, stained glass, and turning everyday utilitarian objects into art. Junked cars ~ I will always veer off the path to search out the beautiful wrecked Arroyo JunKers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and anywhere else the road may lead. When I'm not searching for those JunKers

Deer Skull

This past week I've been working on a new project.  It's a little different from my delicate cutouts, but something I've always wanted to figure out how to do and that is make sculptures.  I don't have a fancy power hammer to help me mold steel ~ I just have a very old arm with three frayed ligaments in it so I can't always do what I really want to do.  So, bear with me as I try to figure out how to make this Deer Skull.

I started out with a couple of scrolls that I bent that I use for my stands when I mount some of the Shovels I make.
See if you look at them sideways they kind of look like eyes.... right?   OK maybe it's just me.  Then I sort of angle them to get the gest of the skull.  Add a scrap piece of steel to mimic the head and old horseshoe for the long nose.

Here's sort of what it will look like with some antlers.  I'll be using three different sizes of rebar for that.  That may be the hard part.... trying to bend those suckers!

I guess you know what I'll be working on this Memorial Day!
Stay safe my friends and please Kiss A VET!  They have sacrificed so much for us.
Luckily I won't have to go far to accomplish that since my ARMY VET is in the next room.

Your antlers will be perfect, SooZe! Don't you have a bender? I thought we all had one! They are pretty cheap from Harbor Freight, made in China, of course, but they work well. Yes, I will kiss a Vet if I can find one! Without them I couldn't have the luxury of bitching and moaning! I do appreciate all that they do and have done!

SZQ- pretty wild set of antlers - and I love how you have recycled earlier bits. Can we see the finished product yet? B

Takin' the back road from Greer to Morenci was gorgeous. This was waiting at the end.
